Details about the location and date of the particular flight school session.

NYU

Main Subject:
Education Alternatives

Minutes from Flight School: Alternative Education Systems:

    • Homeschooling is most often used by very right winged, religious based groups or parents
    • Some parents choose to do basically replicate schools at home,

but other parents unschool. That's when parents teach their children through the child's interests. They learn to read, write, etc. at their own pace and are taught different things through their own inquiry

    • Parents don't have to have all the answers they can seek outside help. Also there is a range of homeschoolers, some who have their kids learn only what the kids want to and others who make sure they teach their kids certain things while allowing their kids to choose most topics to study
    • Can this be done? How can parents do it if they have to work?
    • Maybe the state could subsidize homeschool. If they spend about $7,000 per kid in school, maybe the state could give half of that amount to homeschooling parents

    • There are many different types of charter schools. some kind of exclude kids they don't want. Charter schools are often free from unionized rules, and many state and local laws and educational policies. Also, in New York, they are exempt from most state tests.
    • They are sometimes started by parents, teachers, or administrators of schools and partner with non-profits. Or sometimes they can be for-profit organizations that start charter schools. There are some national non-profit charter schools like KIPP Academy. But sometimes places like KIPP discriminate by attracting the most in-tact families since they make parents sign a commitment contract. parents of students who are not involved or families that are not in tact are less likely to be accepted
    • Who should decide what kids learn, parents or the state?

    • Is knowledge the main goal or school or is it to develop an inquisitive nature so kids can learn on their own?
    • Would people go to college if they could just go straight into a profession?
    • Is education neutral?

    • All education is for something and against something else. You have to teach skills in light of something

    • We want education that pushes significant change, that's what we're supposed to be doing here right, why not require that from our schools?
    • What you should push are critical thinkers

    • Learning should have a purpose. whether to make better citizens, to create social activists, or to create scientists

    • Is that education or indoctrination?

    • I really want to brainstorm on actions to take next Flight School. Let's now take this knowledge and do something with it
    • I thought the point of Flight School was so that organizations and people can have a space to learn, and they can take the learning back to their organizations and plan things. But Flight School shouldn't itself be a planning session
    • Every Flight School should include discussions about how to apply the knowledge whether transforming ourselves, our organizations, or society itself.

We would document what people ant to do and discuss feasible ways to apply the readings
